you, me and five bucks

I was really obsessed with Reality Bites when I graduated from college and moved to Santa Barbara. My friend Rebekah and I used to watch it all the time. I remember sitting around analyzing Ethan Hawke and Wynona Ryder's relationship - especially how Ethan Hawke was feeling when he slowly walked passed Wynona and Ben Stiller getting it on in his convertible BMW. Oh I thought he was so dreamy and misunderstood. In my older and MUCH wiser age that I am now I happened upon this movie last weekend and found myself thinking it was totally ridiculous. Why do we feel things but can't be honest about them? How can we love someone but be afraid to tell them?
Sometimes, I find that if we can just say what we are feeling (whether it is pretty, ugly, honest, or difficult) it really just helps you feel that much closer. A random walk home in the rain after a delightful (and very serious but funny) dinner conversation with a lover can really just make you feel that much closer.

I love, love, love Reality Bites. It's so... collegy. Is that a word? Now I have to go watch it again. The grown-up me still wants her to choose Ben's character. But the college me still would still go for the unemployed, but oh-so-passionate, Ethan.
